1968 graduates of Mrs. Sinns kindergarten class ......... 🦅
The photo below was sent to me by Beverly Hoehing; we were 1968 graduates of Mrs. Sinns kindergarten class. It was taken in the old Jefferson Primary School in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania. Beverly’s, memory, is so much better than mine, and she says I sat at her table back then. All I can say is, she sure must have had the patients of a saint to put up with me. I was a rambunctious kid, always getting in trouble - one way or another. But I can proudly say I learned my ABC’s and I can now count to 100 because of my Kindergarten education. But I can now guess what you all are thinking “No, he isn’t that smart.”
The memory that most stands out about the year 1968 was on one early morning - I noticed my Mother crying on the phone, but she could not explain why.
Later that same day, Mrs. Sinn moved a TV into our Kindergarten classroom, and she was also crying. It was the morning we learned that Robert F Kennedy was assassinated. She explained to us who he was, his family, and how his brother John died. The news coverage repeatedly played the same horrific scene of Robert Kennedy lying on the floor, bleeding from his head wound. The TV played the entire day, and that memory is still embedded in my brain. I will never forget that event and how it made me feel.
But now, looking back to 52 years ago, another great historical figure was also gunned down a few months earlier. His name was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
If my memory serves me correctly, there was no TV on in the
classroom the morning after Dr. King's tragic death. No tears in the classroom,
nor an explanation, as to who he was and his contribution to our national
history. It is funny how some memories fade over time, and others remain with
us well into our old age ......... 🦅
