Religious freedom an important aspect of our American culture ....... 🦅

By Thomas F O’Neill

Every semester, I put a lesson plan together for my Cultural Diversity class here in China. The class is designed to show how religiously diverse America is and how freedom of religion is an important aspect of our American culture.

Every American has the right to communicate their religious or nonreligious beliefs due to it being an intricate part of our American heritage. The majority of Americans are Christians, but the United States is not a Christian Nation because of our religious diversity. We are a microcosm of people representing every religious culture throughout the world.

The Chinese government has estimated that there are approximately 44 million Christians living in China. But many evangelical churches on the Chinese mainland are stating that China is grossly deflating the true Christian representation in China. Some other international Christian organizations estimate there are tens of millions more, Christians, who choose not to publicly identify as such, but these estimations are usually controversial and even suspected as deliberate inflation.

Chinese evangelicals are also claiming that the Chinese government is giving tourists the impression that China is pro-Buddhism. The Chinese are well aware that for thousands of years Buddhism has been interwoven into China’s rich cultural heritage. The Chinese government does not want its citizens to lose their cultural heritage from western influences.

Most of China’s tourist destinations have Buddhist temples as part of their attraction designed to draw in the tourists. On the other hand, Christian churches are restricted from being erected near those tourist sites. This has caused some tensions in China among Christian fundamentalists who feel they're being persecuted by China’s pro-Buddhist attitudes.’

Some human rights activists backed by various Christian denominations claim that the Chinese Government is running a campaign to strip Christian churches of their crosses. They proclaim in their literature that 1,200 churches in the Zhejiang province in eastern China had their crosses removed by the Chinese government. By their estimates, China is home to 100 million Christians, compared with the Communist party’s 91 million members.

Those same human rights activists believe China’s communist party perceives the growth of Christianity as a threat. However, Buddhism is the most favored religion in China, favored by both the Chinese people and by the Chinese government.

This has not stopped Christian leaders from filing complaints with the Zhejiang Province’s ‘Ethnic and Religious Affairs Bureau’. They claim hundreds of places of worship have had bright red crosses removed. Some churches have been completely demolished, while civil servants have been banned from practicing their Christian faith. Those same Christian leaders suspect that the anti-Christian campaign has the backing of the Chinese president, Xi Jinping, and could be a “pilot project” before a nationwide crackdown.

Officials from Zhejiang’s ‘Ethnic and Religious Affairs Bureau’ responded to the complaints. Stating the government had “merely relocated the crosses out of safety concerns.”

“Generally speaking, the church staff and people are very supportive [of the removals],” an official added. Christian communities both protestant and Catholic are extremely angry over the removal of the crosses. A group of Catholic clergy – including an 89-year-old bishop – took to the streets to protest. “What they are doing feels like something from the Cultural Revolution era,” complained one religious’ leader from Zhejiang.

Catholic leaders have also circulated an open letter claiming the removals of crosses from churches have gotten “completely out of control.”

The letter went on to say, “our diocese has been patient and reasonable – again and again we have shown tolerance, prayed, communicated and observed, hoping that the haze would clear.”

The letter went on to say, “But they have not stopped. Rather, they have escalated the campaign and have rushed to attack the cross, the symbol of peace and love.”

Addressing China’s Christian population, the letter concluded: “Let us speak out.”

A five-story church in the city of Wenling was demolished recently; the government claims the Church was demolished voluntarily.

A government report states, “the church had expanded without going through the proper approval process and was relocated.” Various news outlets have done stories on the relocation of the Church but that has not stopped the flow of persecution claims from evangelical Christians.

The Chinese government report also went on to state, “the building not only affected city planning but also posed a severe threat to road safety.”

Christian leaders are also claiming that the Chinese government’s “antichurch” campaign has gotten so far out of hand that government officials are deploying groups of incense-burning Buddhist monks to “provoke” Christians who are trying to defend their cross.

Protestant ministers are complaining also that they believe Chinese officials’ – by sending monks to chant sutras in front of Protestant Churches is nothing more than a ploy to get Christian congregations riled up.

One Christian fundamentalist stated, “they’re trying to make us angry so that we retaliate against them.”

I remind my students that I’m not a religious person and I don’t particularly believe in any brand of religion. But we all can learn a great deal from Buddhism it has intrigued me for many years. I understand why the Chinese government would endorse the Buddhist belief system - over all other religious beliefs and practices. Buddhism after all is ingrained in China’s culture and heritage. For many in China, especially, among the youth, Buddhism is more of an intellectual pursuit rather than a religious practice.

The majority of the Chinese do not have fundamentalist attitudes when it comes to religion. That is a good thing because I for one would not want to live in a theocracy.

I also like to remind my students, - fundamentalism in any form is dangerous – it forces ill-willed people to live their lives ignorantly due to a lack of spiritual insight and a narrow-minded belief system. You can find these extremists in every religion throughout history.

Religion is shaped by one's parents and by their parents' parents, but our spirituality is what we are born with. Spirituality is the spark, the essence, and the spirit that sustains us and all things. It is beyond rituals and religious symbols because it's the core of our existence. True spirituality is the torch that lights the way, not religious principles that are imposed or mandated on others. It is lived and expressed freely in one’s character for others to emulate and embrace.

Growing up as an American, I recognize the importance of having a separation of church and state in our democracy. Americans can worship as they choose without government intrusions. That is certainly a good thing for our democratic way of life.

America is far from being perfect, but it has always been a beacon of light for people throughout the world. People from all parts of the globe have sought to come to America. They do so in order to emulate and embrace our American way of life and that is just one of the reasons why I’m proud to be an American.

Internet gaming has become a modern addiction for many of today’s youth ....... 🦅

By Thomas F O’Neill

There are times when I feel I’m spending too much time browsing the internet. The reason being, I’m connected to the world wide web continuously between my computer and smartphone. The internet, after all, has countless materials I can use to make my classes more interesting for my students here in China and that is certainly a good thing.

I never use the internet to play online computer games as many do here and elsewhere around the world. In recent months, I learned that there is a growing number of computer addicts in Asia who are addicted to online gaming.

According to ‘China Youth Association for Network Development’ over 30% of China’s population find their internet use problematic, and more than half of China’s internet users between the age of 35 and under are “obsessed” with online computer games.

Many of China’s parents are now paying about $3,000-USD to send their children to ‘Internet Addiction Boot Camps.’ On average young adults in China spend 3.2 hours at night online, mainly playing online games and on instant messaging. The Chinese Government in 2019 declared online addiction as the number one health risk for China’s youth.

Online gaming can indeed be dangerous to your health as proven recently. A Chinese video-game addict dropped dead from stress and exhaustion after gaming for 20 hours in an Internet cafe in Chengdu. Two secondary school students in Chongqing were also killed. Exhausted after two days of online gaming they were both killed by a train when they fell asleep on railroad tracks. In Tianjin, a 13-year-old boy after a 36-hour session of World of Warcraft—leaped off the roof of his 24-story building, hoping to “join the heroes of the game.”

My students ask me what video games I enjoy playing? I tell them that I never played a video game and I never had the interest to play one. Many children will play games online with total strangers from all over the world. I find that quite intriguing but like I said it was never 'my cup of tea.'

The internet surely makes my life and perhaps billions of other people’s lives throughout the world, much easier. We can buy countless products online and gain information on any topic instantly with just the click of a computer mouse.

I can also call just about anyone throughout the world who has a mobile or landline phone via Skype. This sort of technology did not exist in my youth-filled days and most people, today, especially people my students' ages are clueless as to what the world was like before our existing technology.

Our modern internet has certainly made my teaching much easier. I can now store all my lesson plans onto a 128 Gig thumb drive or upload them to an ‘Internet Cloud.’ My students can then load my lesson plans onto their thumb drives or computers for review.

When I was the age of my students - I never imagined that textbooks in the future would be digitized. Students can now load all their textbooks on an iPad, smartphone, or laptop computer. Those days of lugging your textbooks to class are long gone and that to me is certainly a good thing.

Today’s technology is only a shadow of what is to come and like I said many times before 'I can’t even imagine where technology will be when my students are my age.'

A company in China called ‘Tencent’ is the leading industry in developing robotic technology that uses the internet as a gateway for robots to gather and communicate with their surrounding environment. Robots by using artificial intelligence technology here in China can now learn from the information they gather from the internet and they utilize that information to assist us, humans. I think that is the only logical direction an artificially intelligent internet can go. Perhaps the internet of the future will become the ultimate tutor for those future struggling students. That is if their parents can get them away from the video games.

Internet addiction is no laughing matter, and it is just as debilitating as any other addiction. But internet addiction seems more problematic in Asian countries than in America.

Neurol-scientists have been studying the effects internet addiction has on the brain. What they discovered is that video game addiction has similar chemical reactions in the brain as someone who is addicted to sex. Scientists have also discovered that the chemical reactions in the brain become intoxicating for both the sex addict and the chronic video game user. There are medications now being developed to help the addict overcome their compulsion to play video games for hours on end.

I tell my students quite often that the future of technology will continue to evolve. But the technology in our lives can be good or bad depending on the hands that are using it.

The overall future of technology does look brighter, but I suppose only time will tell ……

In the photo are my paternal-great-grandparents and they are surrounded by my great aunts and uncles …… 🦅

A remarkably close family member sent this photo to me and I truly appreciate the gesture.

The man and woman sitting front and center in the photo are my paternal-great-grandparents and they are surrounded by my great aunts and uncles.

The photo was taken some time in the mid-1920s and the O’Neills in the photo remind me of how hard people worked back then, and how they celebrated life with humor, love, and affection. I truly miss hearing my Grandfather’s stories of these simpler times …… 🦅

Space and time a preponderance of intrigue ……. 🦅

By Thomas F O’Neill

I recently read quite a few Facebook posts from an ultra-conservative with his approximate 5000 followers. One of his posts is worth mentioning here because he made a false claim that Albert Einstein was a creationist. A few years ago, I enjoyed reading the personal letters of Albert Einstein online. I would like to take the time in this Facebook post to write about some of the things Einstein wrote.

When I read some of his various writings, I find that there was a much deeper dimension to Einstein’s personality than his theories on Relativity. What intrigued me most about his letters was how spiritual he was. He wrote,

"A human being is a part of a whole, called by us _universe_, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest... a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty."

Albert Einstein died in 1955, and since his death, we have come a long way in our technological advancements and in our knowledge of the Universe. However, we have a long way to go as human beings in widening our circle of compassion.

Some have chosen to ignore our empirical understanding of the cosmos. I say this because, of today’s debate, between the Christian Fundamentalists who are still espousing the Intelligent Design theory, as the ultimate biblical truth - against the empirical evidence of Evolution. Some religious conservatives have also made claims that Einstein believed in the biblical creation story.

What I have found is that Einstein did believe in God and in an intelligent design within the universe. He did not however believe in the intelligent design theory that the Christian Fundamentalists want to be taught in the public school system.

Science should be an empirical method of discovery for students, not a religious conviction. To say that God created everything in the universe without a method of studying the claim is not science but rather an emotional and irrational stance against Science. It is one thing to believe in God, to devote one’s life to that belief, and to have blind faith in the assumption that God is the ultimate designer of our Universe, but where do you go from there and where is the scientific method of study?

In one of Einstein’s letters he wrote,

"The further the spiritual evolution of mankind advances, the more certain it seems to me that the path to genuine religiosity does not lie through the fear of life, and the fear of death, and blind faith, but through striving after rational knowledge."

One of Einstein’s achievements was measuring the distance within our Universe by the speed of light. He discovered that light has a constant speed of approximately 186,282.397 miles per second. In view of this discovery, it can take Millions and in some cases Billions of light-years for the light of distant stars to reach the earth. The universe that we perceive is the universe of the past, not the present.

When we look at the sheer vastness of our Universe with the Billions of Suns and Planets it is a statistical certainty that we are not the only intelligent life in the Cosmos. When we measure the birth and evolution of the universe on a scale of a 24-hour period, humanity would have been born 10 seconds ago. Therefore, some intelligent life in far-off galaxies could have had an evolutionary head start in terms of Millions and in some cases Billions of years before life as we know it existed on earth.

Some scientists would also go as far as to say that in far-off galaxies intelligent life could have possibly evolved without a DNA structure, which is essential for intelligent life to exist on our planet. There could be intelligent life in distant galaxies that evolved far beyond our comprehension because of their lack of DNA and due to the vastness of the universe incapable or unwilling to visit our planet.

When you also consider how far evolved, we have become as human beings in only three and a half million years we can presuppose that some intelligent life in the universe evolved far beyond our comprehension. Some intelligent life could have possibly evolved into what some would describe as spiritual beings due to billions of years of evolution.

This is also where science, spirituality, and Philosophy are beginning to merge and complement each other in our pursuit of knowledge.

However, today’s Christian Fundamentalists would argue that it takes as much blind faith to believe in evolution as it does for the Godly people who believe in the biblical creation story.

I do not believe in the Judeo-Christian creation story nor do I believe entirely in the Darwinian evolution theory. I do however believe in evolution because of the scientific evidence that supports it. I do not see evolution as being contradictory to the Intelligent Design theory but rather evolution can be an intricate part of the Universes Intelligent Design.

Einstein also wrote in one of his letters,

“My religion consists of a humble admiration of the illimitable superior spirit who reveals himself in the slight details we are able to perceive with our frail and feeble minds."

Today’s Scientists recognize intelligent patterns within nature. That is why we continue to rely on Science and continue to develop scientific methods to help us gain greater insights into understanding nature’s intelligent design.

Humanity is also pushing to better itself with each generation. It is within that desire for self-improvement that we have evolved to where we are today and will continue to evolve, socially, physically, consciously, and spiritually, for countless generations. With each new generation, humanity is gaining a deeper self-knowledge and becoming more self-aware of the essence of who we are as human beings.

The intelligent design of our own being is also a reflection of the intelligent design within all of nature. Empirical evidence has revealed to us that there is an evolutionary order to all life which some Scientists believe is an intricate part of nature’s intelligent design.

That being said, I also believe there are far deeper dimensions to life than meets the eye which is far beyond our human understanding. Perhaps, in the far distant future humanity will catch a glimpse of the true nature of life and our purpose of being.
